Hopescourt Communications Skills Curriculum Intent 

Cornerstone 1: Engagement 

Vision Theme: Learning with Courage 

The Communications curriculum builds pupils’ self-awareness and emotional understanding. Through courage and curiosity, pupils learn to express themselves and connect meaningfully with others. 

  • Develops self-awareness, emotional literacy, and empathy. 

  • Uses visuals, role-play, and real-world contexts to promote engagement. 

  • Encourages communication as a tool for connection and belonging. 

  • Removes barriers through adaptive strategies and structured interaction. 

  • Promotes respect and kindness as the foundation of all communication. 

Cornerstone 2: Aspiration 

Vision Theme: Thrive through Ambition 

Communications lessons promote ambition by supporting pupils to use their voice confidently and appropriately. They learn to adapt communication styles for different settings and purposes. 

  • Sequenced learning from Year 7–11 builds from self-expression to debate. 

  • Encourages pride and confidence in personal voice. 

  • Promotes teamwork, listening, and problem-solving through group work. 

  • Links to PSHE and Wellbeing for consistent skill development. 

  • Provides opportunities for leadership through discussion and presentation. 

Cornerstone 3: Become Future Ready 

Vision Theme: Preparation for Adulthood 

Pupils leave Hopescourt equipped with communication and social skills essential for adulthood. They can express their needs, manage relationships, and engage confidently in their communities. 

  • Develops resilience and empathy in social communication. 

  • Promotes conflict resolution, cooperation, and self-regulation. 

  • Builds readiness for interviews, teamwork, and independent living. 

  • Supports self-advocacy and confidence in expressing opinions. 

  • Strengthens communication for lifelong success and wellbeing.
