Physical Education and BTEC Sport
Physical Education Curriculum Statement - Hopescourt School
At Hopescourt School, our Physical Education (PE) curriculum is rooted in the belief that every student deserves the opportunity to flourish - physically, emotionally, and socially.
Cornerstone 1: Engagement - Learning with Courage
Our PE curriculum is designed to spark curiosity, promote active participation, and build secure foundations for lifelong wellbeing. Through inclusive and meaningful physical activity, students develop:
-
Healthy, active lifestyles
-
Confidence and self-awareness
-
Resilience and emotional regulation
-
Social communication and teamwork skills
Adaptive teaching strategies, structured routines, and sensory-informed approaches ensure that all learners can access and enjoy PE. Activities are sequenced to support long-term retention and personal growth, with opportunities for emotional regulation and self-expression embedded throughout.
Cornerstone 2: Aspiration - Thrive through Ambition
Our PE curriculum is ambitious and autism-informed, offering both breadth and depth across a five-year journey. At Key Stage 4, all pupils continue with Core PE, building on KS3 foundations to maintain physical activity as a key part of their development.
For those who opt to study PE further, we offer the Pearson BTEC Level 1/2 Award in Sport, equivalent to half a GCSE. This course provides a relevant and engaging introduction to the sports industry, covering:
-
Fitness testing and training
-
Sports psychology
-
Practical performance
-
Sports leadership
-
Anatomy and physiology
-
Lifestyle and wellbeing
Assessment is through a combination of coursework and externally marked onscreen tests, with regular feedback to support progress. This qualification lays a strong foundation for further academic or vocational study, including Level 3 pathways and apprenticeships.
Cornerstone 3: Become Future Ready - Preparation for Adulthood
PE at Hopescourt is not just about sport - it’s about preparing students for life. Our curriculum supports holistic personal development, helping learners become resilient, active citizens. We prioritise emotional wellbeing and equip students with life management skills such as:
-
Leadership and problem-solving
-
Communication and collaboration
-
Self-care and independence
Through PE, students gain the confidence and motivation to pursue healthy lifestyles beyond school, engage in community-based physical activity, and thrive in their chosen pathways.
