Geography Curriculum Statement – Hopescourt School

Curriculum Intent

At Hopescourt School, our Geography curriculum is designed to spark curiosity, build spatial awareness, and empower students to understand the relationship between people, places, and environments through inclusive, autism-informed learning. Rooted in our ethos of Pause, Breathe, Think, Flourish, and guided by the Cornerstones of Learning with Courage, Thrive through Ambition, and Preparation for Adulthood, Geography becomes a tool for exploring global systems, local landscapes, and human impact. We aim to create a safe, structured, and stimulating environment where every learner can develop:

Learning with Courage – Investigate physical and human geography with curiosity and resilience. Students explore natural hazards, climate change, and global inequalities while developing strategies for emotional regulation and enquiry.

Thriving through Ambition – Build geographical knowledge and fieldwork skills to support academic achievement and future pathways. Pupils interpret data, use maps and GIS tools, and communicate findings with clarity and purpose.

Becoming Future Ready – Understand environmental responsibility and global citizenship. Students learn to evaluate sustainability, make informed decisions, and contribute to their communities and the wider world.

Our curriculum is sequenced to support long-term retention and mastery, with adaptive teaching strategies that remove barriers and promote readiness. We recognise the unique profiles of our learners and ensure that Geography is accessible, ambitious, and autism-informed, supporting both academic growth and personal development. Geography at Hopescourt is not just about maps and facts. It’s about equipping students to navigate the world thoughtfully, ask meaningful questions, and contribute to a sustainable future.

History Curriculum Statement – Hopescourt School

Curriculum Intent

At Hopescourt School, our History curriculum is designed to ignite curiosity, foster critical thinking, and empower students to understand the world through inclusive, autism-informed learning. Rooted in our ethos of Pause, Breathe, Think, Flourish, and guided by the Cornerstones of Learning with Courage, Thrive through Ambition, and Preparation for Adulthood, History becomes a lens through which students explore identity, society, and change. We aim to create a safe, structured, and stimulating environment where every learner can develop:

Learning with Courage – Explore challenging historical events and perspectives with empathy and resilience. Students learn to analyse sources, question narratives, and understand the impact of conflict, power, and protest across time.

Thriving through Ambition – Build historical knowledge and critical thinking to support academic progress and future study. Pupils develop research skills, construct arguments, and present ideas with clarity and confidence.

Becoming Future Ready – Understand how the past shapes the present and informs responsible citizenship. Students learn to evaluate bias, recognise patterns of change, and apply historical insight to modern societal issues.

Our curriculum is sequenced to support long-term retention and mastery, with adaptive teaching strategies that remove barriers and promote readiness. We recognise the unique profiles of our learners and ensure that History is accessible, ambitious, and autism-informed, supporting both academic growth and personal development. History at Hopescourt is not just about dates and facts; it’s about empowering students to become thoughtful, resilient citizens who can question, reflect, and contribute meaningfully to society.
